Fall season you see pumpkin pumpkin every where! I thought it would be fun to make a pumpkin craft for the kindergarten craft session. Big 3D paper pumpkin! I searched for paper pumpkin crafts and found a whole lot of them. But most of them were not very kid-friendly. So I created a template from construction paper, interested how we made the paper pumpkin from the template...
We read the book Pumpkin Pumpkin
by Jeanne Titherington in the kindergarten class and the kids made the 3D paper pumpkin
The story is about a little boy Jamie who plants a pumpkin seed in spring and watches the seed sprout, grow into a pumpkin plant, pumpkin plant grow a pumpkin flower and the flower grow into a big giant pumpkin. For Halloween, Jamie converts the giant pumpkin into Jack-O-Lantern and in the process he gets pumpkin seeds to plant in the spring. It's an excellent book to teach the life cycle of Pumpkin.
Child safe scissors
Marker/Pencil
Ruler
Sellotape/Sticky tape
Glue stick(preferred)/ no run glue
Take an orange construction paper, ruler and pencil/marker
Make a template as shown below, draw lines 9.5 inches long with spacing of 1 inch as shown below
I thought the kids will have a fun learning measurement with the ruler and practice straight line drawing. But the kids found it little hard figuring that. So it's a better idea to make the template before hand that too if you are trying the craft with a larger group(classroom) and lesser age group kids
Cut along the lines as shown
Once they are down, roll the paper into a cylinder in such a way the edges are touching and fasten it with a sellotape.
Make the rolled paper stand up with the strips facing up.
Start folding along the end where the strip/cut begins
The kids where excited when they came to this step, that's a flower
Turn it upside down as shown, now the kids thought it looked like an octopus
Make a inch fold to the end of the strips as shown in the above picture. Apply glue on the 1 inch fold.
Take the glued end of the strip upward and glue it to the top inner cylinder forming a pumpkin shape
Cut a 9 inch X 5 inch brown rectangle. Roll it into a cylinder. Fasten with a sellotape/sticky tape. Glue the stem to the pumpkin base
Cut a couple of leaf shapes from the green construction paper and add the leaves to the top of the pumpkin with glue/tape. I made the kids write their name on the leaf.
Make tendrils by curling a thin strip of green paper around a pencil. Attach it to the top of the pumpkin
3D Paper Pumpkin Complete!
Don't they look beautiful! Just like a pumpkin Patch!
The Kindergarten teacher gave the idea of adding yarn to the top of the pumpkin so that they can be used as a hanging decoration.
The Pumpkins hanging from the classroom loft!
They are perfect and simple for fall decor. How about decorating the thanksgiving table with the kids masterpieces:-)
