Jack-o-lantern come in all sizes

As I wrote in my previous post of simple paper Jack-O-Lantern we have not carved pumpkins in our life time. We go for no-carve version. From the start of Halloween season, CJ has been asking to carve and finally we made it. Yay!

Jack-O-Lantern

The Inspiration for making small and big Jack-O-Lanterns is from the book - The Bumpy Little Pumpkin, more about the book here!!

We got our pumpkins from the Church Pumpkin Patch. CJ wanted a perfect pumpkin so she ran around for sometime, searched and picked lots but we finally settled on 7 pumpkins - 1 big Smooth skin, 1 medium round bumpy pumpkin, 3 mini bumpy pumpkin and 2 mini smooth skin. CJ decided there itself what she would do with each one of them. She said "Mommy, Jack-O-lantern come in all sizes, so lets make one big and two tiny Jack-O-Lanterns"

I browsed through the internet for Pumpkin carving and followed few steps from Martha Steward web page - How to Carve a Pumpkin. We got Pumpkin carving tool from Dollar store, a less expensive one. Though I involved CJ in few steps of craving, all the time I asked her to stay away from the craving edge.

For the mini pumpkins, I let Cj to draw the pattern on the pumpkin with a marker. Oops! I gave a permanent marker. From the lesson learnt, We used pencils(you can also use washable markers) for the bigger pumpkin.

I cut the lid from the pumpkin using the saw tool and using a spoon we scooped out the Goo from the pumpkin

After scooping out completely, I started craving the pattern out.

Mini Jack-O-Lanterns lit up! We used LED Tea lights to light them up.

For the bigger Pumpkin, it was little heavy for CJ to hold and draw. So she preferred to draw the design on the paper and I followed the pattern on the pumpkin.

Funny she selected heart shapes for the eyes.

Cj wanted heart shaped cheeks but finally changed her mind to diamond shaped cheeks.

Big Carved pumpkin!

We got our last year pumpkin, Ghost Luminaries and lined them all up

Glowing Jack-O-Lanterns!

PS I have not given step by step carving procedure and the safety precautions. You can check out the below links for details on the carving techniques and safety tips.
