Thumbprint/Fingerprint Freight Train

Thumbprint/Fingerprint Freight Train

Book

Freight Train is one of our favorite Train books. I think we started reading the book when CJ was 2 yrs old. Her obsession for Trains and Rainbow makes it a hit. Please hop on to my other blog, kidobook to read more about the book.

Craft

We created thumbprint Freight Train painting. I got the idea of thumbprint train from the book - Ed Emberley's Complete Funprint Drawing Book

Materials Used:

Canvas/Poster board
Tempera Washable paints
Black marker
Tooth brush
Masking tape
Newspaper
Felt markers/washable markers
Egg carton

Steps Overview:

Before painting on the canvas we tried thumbprints on construction paper.

We started off with the engine. We used egg carton for storing different colors and I kept a cup of water to wash thumb after each thumb printing.

We used either single thumbprint or four as shown for the cars and boxes

After completing the thumbprints and letting it to dry for sometime. I gave CJ the freight train book and Ed Emberley's thumbprint book so that she can see how to add the details.

CJ had fun making wheels and details. We used pom-pom stampingfor the smoke.

Packing peanut stamping:

We also tried packing peanuts stamping

For the wheels, we used Q-tips

I like the way CJ added the train details:-)

Canvas Painting

After the two successful attempts, we got confidence and started painting our Freight train on canvas. I helped CJ to make neat thumbprints. On CJ's request, I added a new pink car to the Freight train.

I outlined the details of the train with permanent marker. For the wheels of the train, we stamped the circles using Marker pens and Syringe ends. Using a ruler and marker, the tracks were added. I let CJ to color them.

For the rocky effect below the tracks, we used splatter painting. I masked the portion above the tracks with a masking tape and a paper. After leaving a inch space, the remaining portion was masked using masking tape. Then I let CJ to splatter black paint using Tooth brush.

Finally we stamped Pom-pom smokes!

I used silver paint for the smokes. In the photograph, its seen shiny but whereas its not.

I just love the way it turned out! Does it match the cover page of Freight train book?
